Not just a delicious source of nutrition when consumed as a food or a juice, the humble cranberry has long been renowned for its health-giving properties.

They may look innocuous, but cranberries pack a wellness punch. They’re full of bioactive compounds, such as proanthocyanidins (PAC), which have therapeutic benefits such as the ability to help reduce the frequency of recurrent urinary tract infections (UTIs).

As per the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 40%-60% of women develop a UTI during their lifetime, and most of these infections are of bladder. Moreover, around 25% of these are likely to be recurrent, causing discomfort for anyone who has had the misfortune to be impacted.

Antibiotics are currently the standard treatment for nipping UTIs in the bud. However, given the risk of antibiotic resistance, healthcare professionals are looking for alternatives, which is where our little red friend comes in. In a recent systematic review, investigators recommended ingestion of cranberries to decrease the number of recurrent infections, which is great news if UTIs have an unwelcome “thing” for you.

We just can’t get enough cranberry love here at Swisse, which is why we’re currently conducting our own clinical trial in partnership with the CSIRO. The trial is investigating the effects of cranberry supplements on the rate of UTIs in a population of women prone to recurrent infection. The aim of the study is to determine whether Swisse High Strength Cranberry (Pacran®, a trademark of Naturex) can prevent recurrent UTI. The trial will run for two years (concluding in 2019) and we’re really excited about the results.

In the meantime, if you had your fill of cranberry sauce at Christmas, there are other ways to make sure you’re getting enough of these nutritional megastars. You may consider taking Swisse Ultiboost High Strength Cranberry to help support urinary tract health.
