Sponsor of the Health category in this year’s Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards, Swisse Wellness, has announced the winner of the category is Beaconsfield Dental for their holistic approach to sustainability in their practice and around their site.

Swisse Wellness Group Director – Communications, Sarah Chibnall, congratulated the team and described them as health sustainability leaders. “Beaconsfield Dental is a terrific example of multiple initiatives being used to achieve impacts through years of perseverance and hard work,” she said.

“We’ve partnered with the Victorian Premier’s Sustainability Awards to sponsor the Health category, because the awards program shares our values of positive and sustainable health outcomes across the whole community. As a wellness company with a mission to make people healthier and happier, we consider the relationship between products, business performance and the planet.”

In 2017, practice owners added 66 new solar panels to the existing 60 – the solar panels have generated over 80 megawatts of power in just over four years, with attendant savings in electricity costs and carbon dioxide emissions. Other features around the site include water tanks to supply the Indigenous garden and toilet flush, compost bins, a Tesla car battery charger for patients’ use, and energy efficient lighting and appliances. Patients are encouraged to bring in their old toothbrushes, empty toothpaste and floss containers that are then taken away and recycled, and environmentally-friendly product use is extensive.

At the Awards’ ceremony, the Premier’s Recognition Award was presented to Yume Food for connecting suppliers with buyers to help mitigate the 9.5 million tonnes of food that annually goes to landfill in Australia. Yume Food facilitates a seamless transaction between the buyer and supplier, helps to arrange the delivery of goods and can also manage donations to registered food rescue organisations, helping to ensure edible food gets to the people who need it most.

The Premier also chose Gannawarra Shire Council as winner of the Premier's Regional Recognition Award for its work that puts sustainability at the heart of its local economic future, featuring the first large scale solar farm and battery storage in Victoria. Sustainability Victoria’s Chief Executive, Stan Krpan said winners across ten categories should be applauded for demonstrating the best of sustainability diversity.

“This year’s finalists and winners come from all sorts of backgrounds and sectors, representing the most wide-ranging projects from the most amount of entries in the Awards’ history. The diversity of sustainability endeavor we have seen this year, undertaken by every kind of group, organisation or business imaginable, is outstanding and we’re delighted that the Awards can tell their inspiring stories,” he said.
